Amarinthos
General Information
Amarinthos, also known as Vathia, is a coastal town in Evia, located in the central part of the island, about 30 km southeast of Chalkis, the Southern Gulf of Evia and opposite the northern coast of Attica. With a population of 4,141 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, Amarinthos is one of the largest cities of Evia and the largest municipality in Eretria area.
The valley around the town goes all the way to the Olympos mountain.
The history of the region goes back to the Neolithic period, while Amarinthos later became an important trading center and was known in antiquity for the worship of the goddess Artemis.
